UN to Summon Yemen Warring Parties via Video Link Concerning Hodeidah Ceasefire
According to recent news sources, the UN will convene with the Yemeni warring parties via a video conference this Wednesday to discuss the steps to be taken as part of the Hodeidah ceasefire.
In the conference call, the parties will discuss issues like redeployment of military forces, steps to prevent fighting and maintain peace. As per the words of General Antonio Guterres spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the conference will include security and military representatives from both the US and the Yemeni rivals.
The ceasefire as discussed will start from midnight and to ensure that no chance of further fighting begins, a strict UN monitoring regime will be initiated to ensure compliance. The monitoring team rumored to be called the “Blue Helmet” will be landing in Yemen soon. However, they will be heading the conference video call on Wednesday.
The “Blue Helmet” will be led by a retired major general, Dutchman Patrick Cammaert who had immense expertise in handling peacekeeping operations. He stated that an entire mutual redeployment will be covered in all cities and ports of Hodeidah. These will include ports of Saleef and Ras Isa which will be completed within a span of 21 days.
Right now, peace is what is most essential as stated by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. He will necessarily breathe down the throats of the Yemeni warring parties if it means ensuring a ceasefire.
The reason being the war-stricken Yemenis currently require humanitarian assistance and only with the ceasefire active can the UN provide these people with the necessary livelihood aid.
