Saudi Ambassador Tells US That Only Pressure on Houthis Will Result In Political Settlement
Prince Khalid bin Salman, Saudi Ambassador to the United States took a note of Iran-backed Houthi militias’ accord to deliberate on giving up their control of Yemen’s Hodeidah port to the United Nations. He tweeted that after postponing the peace discourse for many months, the Houthis have finally conceded to discuss giving up their control of the Hodeidah port. In the tweet, he added that this step comes at a point when they are on the fringe of being forced out of Yemen’s many governorates by the use of force.
He further added that the recent action is proof of the fact that with persistent pressure on Iran backed militia, would help to reach a political resolution in Yemen. There are ongoing efforts in order to bring together the fighting parties in Yemen for the peace conference that is due to take place in Sweden in early December.
UN envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, who was in Riyadh, stated that he is looking for a UN role in handling and looking after the port and would go ahead with deliberation before the peace dialogue kicks off in Sweden. Martin has been playing a crucial role in holding peace discussion with legitimate government officials and the Houthis as a part of the UN endeavors.
