UN Chief Reports They are Close to Start the Peace Talk in Sweden
In a recent press conference, UN chief secretory Antonio Guterres was heard saying they are soon to prepare for peace talks in Yemen between warring parties, however, till date, the parties haven’t sent their ultimate confirmation.
Nevertheless, the talk of peace right now is very crucial for Yemen. With so much disruption and conflicts going on Yemen can soon find itself on the verge of collapsing if actions are not taken.
Presently, the U.N. envoy Martin Griffiths is trying to convince the Houthi backed rebels along with the Saudi-led coalition to come to terms of peace. As per the onset of famine in Yemen along with the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the spotlight is currently on Saudi Arabia.
Hence, it’s vital that Saudi and the Houthis come to terms and prevent the war. Initially, both the parties agreed as Griffiths tried to bring the parties together at Geneva.
However, the Houthi’s bolted and didn’t turn up stating they feared their safe return. Nevertheless, Guterres is of the notion that the Sweden agreement will happen. In fact, the government is trying to ensure it happens as if it doesn’t then Yemen will be devastated by the war.
Recently, the Saudi-led airstrikes affected wedding halls, schools, hospitals while the Houthis fired long ranging missiles into Saudi-Arabia. As a result, nearly 10,000 commoners died in the crossfire. Presently with the famine on the verge of hitting Yemen, further war cannot be countered for.
Thus, Guterres is paving the way to head a summit of 20 economic powers in Geneva to develop a draft to urge Yemen’s warring parties to re-in start negotiations. This draft is done mainly to ensure a cease-fire in the port of Hodeidah which is essential for the passage of humanitarian goods to the ear affected in Yemen.
