Washington: Iranian militias are behind the sabotage of ships of the UAE
US national security agencies now believe that Iranian militias have attacked tankers near the UAE, a senior US official said on Tuesday.
Another US official earlier predicted Iran was behind sabotage operations targeting four tankers of the coast of the United Arab Emirates on Sunday (two Saudi carriers, one UAE and one Norwegian).
On Sunday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced that four civilian commercial cargo ships of various nationalities had been subjected to sabotage operations near the territorial waters of the state, towards the eastern coast near the Emirate of Fujairah and near the
territorial waters and in the economic waters of the UAE.
The UAE Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the concerned authorities have taken all the necessary measures and the investigation into the circumstances of the incident is being conducted in cooperation with local and international bodies.
On Monday, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Faleh confirmed that two Saudi tankers had been sabotaged near the UAE’s territorial waters.
He explained that at six o’clock on Sunday 12 May 2019, two Saudi carriers were attacked, on their way to cross the Arabian Gulf in the economic waters of the United Arab Emirates, near the Emirate of Fujairah, while one was on its way to load Saudi oil from the port of Ras-Tanura ,then heading towards the United States to supply Saudi Aramco customers.
